SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19), has managed to strike fear into the hearts of many and change the way we interact with one another in ways previously unimaginable. The rights and freedoms of the individual are being challenged daily by those in power for what they say is the good of society. Anything that contradicts the current narrative is being refuted and shamed, even when it comes from renowned experts in the field of medicine. This blog will not address those things but briefly address what is known. Common symptoms of COVID-19 or the coronavirus include:

  • Fever
  • Body aches
  • Chills
  • Loss of appetite
  • Loss of smell
  • Fatigue
  • Nasal congestion
  • Runny nose
  • Headache
  • Diarrhea

All of the above symptoms can be associated with the common cold or the flu, but the following symptoms are more concerning for COVID-19 (fever, shortness of breath, chest pressure and severe cough). If you have the above symptoms call your doctor’s office to make them aware.

Certain factors increase risk of complications, hospitalizations and even death due to this disease. These risk factors include: a) age, b) having other chronic conditions (asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, hypertension, autoimmune diseases, kidney disease, cancer and diabetes), c) being overweight or obese, and d) vitamin D deficiency.

You will not hear this stated commonly in mainstream media but most individuals under age 50, without the above diseases, if they have COVID-19 will recover without complications. Even individuals over 50 who are healthy will recover from COVID-19 and usually have mild to moderate symptoms. However, those over age 50 and or those with chronic conditions have increased risk of complications, hospitalizations and death if they are diagnosed with COVID-19, so early treatment is key !

Is this disease serious, very much so. Unfortunately COVID-19 complications are secondary to an exaggerated inflammatory and blood clotting response that can lead to clots, organ failure and death. So, early treatment is essential to decrease these risks. The Association of American Physicians & Surgeons remind us that the key pillars in controlling any infectious disease are: a) stopping the spread of the infection by controlling the contagion, b) early home treatment which helps to reduce hospitalizations, c) hospital treatment if early home treatment fails and d) vaccination. In America, there has been a great deal of focus on steps 1, 3 and 4 but unfortunately, early treatment with medications such as Zinc, Vitamin C, Hydroxychloroquine, Ivermectin, Doxycycline and Azithromycin have been vilified. So if you or someone you love have been diagnosed with COVID-19, please do not fear, seek early treatment.
