Headaches: Types, Symptoms, and When to Seek Care
Headaches are one of the most common health complaints. While they can be painful, inconvenient, and sometimes debilitating, most headaches are not life-threatening. Understanding the type of headache you have is key to finding relief and knowing when to seek medical attention.
When to Seek Urgent Care for a Headache
Certain headache symptoms require prompt medical evaluation, including:
-
New headaches with neurological symptoms (facial paralysis, vision changes, weakness, or numbness)
-
Sudden onset of the “worst headache ever”
-
Headaches accompanied by projectile vomiting
These symptoms may indicate a serious underlying condition and should be evaluated immediately.
Common Types of Headaches
1. Tension Headaches
Tension headaches are the most common type. Symptoms may include:
-
Pressure or tightness around both sides of the head or neck
-
Mild to moderate throbbing
-
Tenderness in the head, neck, or shoulder muscles
Tension headaches are often linked to stress, poor posture, or prolonged screen time. They are not typically associated with nausea, vomiting, or sensitivity to light and sound.
2. Migraine Headaches
Migraines are more severe and may include:
-
Moderate to severe pain that worsens with light, noise, or movement
-
Nausea or vomiting
-
Pain lasting hours to days
Migraines are more common in women and may change in frequency after menopause. Dark, quiet rooms can help ease symptoms, and identifying food triggers may reduce frequency.
3. Cluster Headaches
Cluster headaches are intense and have a distinctive pattern. Symptoms include:
-
Sudden onset, peaking within minutes
-
Severe, continuous pain (often around one eye or temple)
-
Redness and tearing in the affected eye
-
Sweating and nasal congestion on the affected side
Cluster headaches occur more often in men. Alcohol and smoking can trigger attacks.
Treatment for Headaches
Treatment depends on the type of headache. Options may include:
-
Stress management and relaxation techniques
-
Over-the-counter or prescription medications
-
Posture correction and ergonomic adjustments
-
Identifying and avoiding triggers
