At Compassion Primary Care, we love highlighting voices in the integrative health community who inspire balanced living. This month, we’re excited to welcome guest blogger Jenelle Williams, a Certified IIN Health Coach and founder of Live Right Remedy, who brings her practical wisdom on navigating holiday eating with mindfulness and joy.

The holiday season has arrived. You blinked, and somehow August turned into November. Thanksgiving and Christmas will soon be here, and all the tasty temptations are swirling around you. How can you navigate this season while keeping your health in check?

If you’re having some doubts about preventing a spiral of seasonal indulgence, let me encourage you: it is possible!
My name is Jenelle Williams, and I am a certified IIN (Institute for Integrative Nutrition) Health Coach. I’m happy to share five nutritional tips and tricks to help you stay healthy while still enjoying the full benefits of the holiday season amidst the hustle and bustle.

1. Create Homemade Meals

When you take the time to cook your own food, you can control which ingredients you use. Choose the best quality possible (within your means), adjusting recipes as needed. You’ll be surprised at what you can make with a little creativity. If the idea of using a lot of ingredients is overwhelming, keep it simple. There is a plethora of delicious, healthy holiday recipes online that don’t require much, including what you may already have on hand!

2. Chew Mindfully to Prevent Overeating

Take your time to enjoy each bite of food truly. Mindful eating helps you savor the flavors and appreciate the combination of taste and texture. When you eat more slowly, you’ll recognize when you’re full sooner and avoid the uncomfortable bloat of an overstuffed stomach.

3. Avoid Extreme Restrictions

It’s okay if you don’t know every ingredient in a dish. As long you don’t have any concerning allergies or food intolerance, allow yourself to eat something that brings you pleasure.
Balanced eating during the holidays is about moderation, not deprivation. Limiting yourself too much is stressful and may leave you feeling miserable (or secretly downing a whole pie!) instead of happily making memories around the table with those you love.

4. Consider Supplements for Digestive Support

If you’re planning to indulge in a holiday celebration with family or friends, consider taking a digestive enzyme supplement to aid your digestion. This may help reduce discomfort that can occur after eating a large meal. Activated charcoal may also help with gas and bloating. Be sure to first consult your doctor before starting any new supplement.

5. Stay Accountable

If you suspect that your weakness for unhealthy indulgence may be especially prevalent during the holidays, consider confiding in someone you trust to help keep you on track with your health goals.
A health coach is an invaluable resource for supporting and achieving your goals while also alleviating the pressure of navigating the holiday season.
Health coaching can guide you to truly thrive in a way that’s right for you—during holiday times and long after.
