Advanced Lab Testing

Standard blood panels were designed to catch disease, not to prevent it. They usually measure a narrow set of markers at a single point in time, interpreted against population averages that reflect what's "normal," not what's optimal.

Compassion Primary Care uses specialized, advanced lab testing to look deeper. Every patient's workup is different, but the types of testing available include hormone metabolite panels, comprehensive gut health analysis, and food sensitivity testing that identifies sources of chronic inflammation. The result is not just data, it's a precise, actionable map of what's holding your health back.

Advanced Lab Testing

Does This Sound Like You?

Advanced lab testing might be right for you if:

  • You've had standard labs come back "normal" but still feel far from well
  • You deal with persistent fatigue, brain fog, bloating, or unexplained weight changes
  • You suspect hormonal imbalances but haven't been able to confirm it through conventional testing
  • You experience chronic digestive issues – including gas, bloating, irregular bowel movements, or food reactions
  • You've tried elimination diets or supplements with inconsistent results
  • You have a family history of autoimmune conditions or metabolic disease
  • You want a data-driven foundation for your health decisions rather than trial and error

If any of this resonates, the right tests can finally give you the answers your symptoms have been pointing toward.

What Is Advanced Lab Testing?

Advanced lab testing uses specialized diagnostic tools to assess how your body's systems are actually functioning, not just whether disease is present.

Where a standard panel might tell you your thyroid TSH is within range, an advanced panel reveals whether your body is converting thyroid hormone to its active form, whether antibodies are attacking the gland, and whether stress hormones are interfering with thyroid metabolism.

Where a standard stool culture looks for acute infection, the Tiny Health PRO Gut Health Test uses shotgun metagenomics to sequence the full DNA of every organism in a stool sample, screening for over 120,000 bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites alongside functional markers for gut inflammation, immune function, and hormone metabolism."

The three tests we use most frequently in our practice are the DUTCH Complete, the Tiny Health PRO Gut Health Test, and the KBMO FIT Test, each addressing a distinct but deeply interconnected dimension of health.

Why Standard Testing Isn't Enough

An estimated 60% of U.S. adults live with at least one chronic condition and the vast majority were not identified in their earliest, most reversible stage.

Over 100 million people worldwide are affected by food sensitivities, most undiagnosed. Studies show that gut dysbiosis is present in a significant proportion of patients with autoimmune disease, metabolic dysfunction, mood disorders, and chronic fatigue, yet standard GI testing rarely detects it.

Comprehensive hormone metabolite testing via dried urine panels reveals clinically significant patterns that blood testing alone misses in a large proportion of patients with hormonal symptoms.

The data is consistent: standard testing leaves a substantial gap, and advanced lab testing exists to fill it.

Signs You May Need Deeper Testing

These are the presentations we commonly see in patients who benefit most from our core advanced panels:

  • Fatigue, poor sleep, or feeling "wired but tired", even with normal thyroid results
  • Hormonal symptoms: PMS, irregular cycles, perimenopause, low libido, mood swings
  • Digestive complaints that have persisted despite dietary changes or standard GI workup
  • Unexplained skin issues: eczema, acne, rosacea, or chronic hives
  • Autoimmune conditions or a strong family history of them
  • Anxiety, depression, or brain fog with no clear cause identified
  • Difficulty losing weight despite diet and exercise
  • Frequent headaches, joint pain, or systemic inflammation

The Science Behind Advanced Diagnostic Testing

The clinical value of comprehensive advanced testing lies in its ability to identify dysfunction upstream, before it becomes diagnosable disease.

Hormone metabolite testing via dried urine, for example, reveals not just hormone levels but the specific enzymatic pathways your body uses to break down estrogen, cortisol, and androgens.

These metabolic patterns carry meaningful clinical implications for cancer risk, mood regulation, energy, and sleep that a blood draw simply cannot provide.

Shotgun metagenomic sequencing reads the full DNA of every organism in a stool sample, identifying microbial imbalances, pathogens, and inflammatory markers with a level of sensitivity and breadth that conventional stool cultures and targeted panels cannot match.

Food sensitivity testing using multi-pathway IgG and immune complex analysis identifies delayed hypersensitivity reactions. These reactions don't cause immediate symptoms but drive chronic systemic inflammation over time.

The evidence base for each of these modalities continues to grow, and at Compassion Primary Care, we apply them in the context of your full clinical picture.

Advanced Lab Testing

Our Core Advanced Lab Tests

Blood Testing – The Essential Baseline

Blood testing remains the gold standard for a critical set of markers and is the foundation of every advanced testing protocol at Compassion Primary Care.

A comprehensive blood panel gives us your thyroid function (TSH, Free T3, Free T4, Reverse T3, and thyroid antibodies), fasting insulin and glucose for metabolic assessment, inflammatory markers including hs-CRP and homocysteine, and a full lipid panel.

Blood tests measure both bound and free hormones circulating in your system and are ideal for establishing baselines, monitoring treatment response, and tracking changes over time.

The key limitation is that a single draw captures just one moment – it won't reveal daily rhythms, hormone metabolism pathways, or delayed immune reactions. That's exactly where the DUTCH, Tiny Health PRO, and KBMO FIT pick up where blood work leaves off.

The DUTCH Complete – Comprehensive Hormone Metabolite Testing

The DUTCH Complete (Dried Urine Test for Comprehensive Hormones) is the most advanced hormone test available. By collecting 4-5 dried urine samples over a 24-hour period, it captures not just hormone levels but their metabolites, the breakdown products that reveal how your body is actually processing hormones.

For women, this means seeing exactly how estrogen is being metabolized: down the protective 2-OH pathway, the neutral 16-OH pathway, or the potentially harmful 4-OH pathway, a distinction with significant implications for breast health and hormonal cancer risk.

For both men and women, it maps cortisol production and clearance across the full day, including the Cortisol Awakening Response, the natural morning cortisol surge that should occur within 30–45 minutes of waking and reflects healthy HPA axis function.

It also includes melatonin, DHEA metabolites, androgens, and organic acid markers tied to B vitamin status, neurotransmitter function, and oxidative stress.

The DUTCH Complete is particularly valuable for patients with PMS, perimenopause symptoms, fatigue, insomnia, anxiety, burnout, or any presentation where hormonal patterns, not just levels, are clinically relevant.

The Tiny Health PRO Gut Health Test – Advanced Gut Microbiome and Stool Chemistry Analysis

The Tiny Health PRO Gut Health Test uses shotgun metagenomics, a sequencing method that reads the full DNA of every organism in a stool sample rather than targeting a limited list of known species. Each sample screens for over 120,000 bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites, capturing the full microbial landscape rather than a narrow snapshot.

Beyond identifying which organisms are present, the test includes functional profiling that reveals what those organisms are actually doing, from supporting digestion to metabolizing hormones and toxins. The PRO version adds stool chemistry markers for gut inflammation, immune function, digestive enzyme activity, nutrient absorption, and short-chain fatty acid production.

One marker with particular relevance for women in midlife is beta-glucuronidase, an enzyme that influences how the body processes and eliminates estrogen. Elevated levels can contribute to estrogen recirculation, making it a meaningful data point for patients experiencing hormone-related symptoms.

The Tiny Health PRO Gut Health Test is valuable for patients with bloating, food sensitivities, skin conditions, autoimmune concerns, mood changes, and any presentation where the connection between gut health, immune function, and hormones may be playing a role.

The KBMO FIT Test – Multi-Pathway Food Sensitivity and Leaky Gut Testing

The KBMO FIT Test (Food Inflammation Test) is the only food sensitivity test on the market that measures both IgG antibodies (subclasses 1–4) and complement C3d immune complexes – the two primary pathways of delayed food hypersensitivity.

This dual-pathway approach identifies reactive foods that single-pathway IgG tests miss, making it the most comprehensive food sensitivity panel available.

The FIT 176 panel tests sensitivities to 176 foods, colorings, and additives spanning all major food groups and uniquely includes a Gut Barrier Panel measuring zonulin, occludin, LPS (lipopolysaccharide), and Candida.

These markers directly assess intestinal permeability, giving a single test the ability to identify food sensitivities, measure inflammation, and evaluate gut barrier function simultaneously.

The FIT Test is particularly valuable for patients with unexplained chronic symptoms, fatigue, bloating, skin issues, joint pain, anxiety, weight resistance, where an unidentified food driver may be sustaining systemic inflammation.

Results come with a color-coded report and a customized 7-day meal plan, making the elimination protocol straightforward to implement.

How We Use These Tests Together

Each of these tests examines a different system, hormones, gut, and immune reactivity, but these systems are deeply interconnected: gut dysbiosis drives inflammation that disrupts hormone metabolism, food sensitivities increase intestinal permeability and affect neurotransmitter production, and hormonal imbalance alters gut motility and microbiome composition.

Combining DUTCH, Tiny Health PRO, and KBMO FIT findings with your clinical presentation often reveals the patterns patients have been searching for.

We don't order every test for every patient; based on your history, symptoms, and goals, we determine the combination that will provide the most actionable information, route as many tests as possible through your insurance, and discuss any out-of-pocket costs transparently before ordering.

What to Expect at Compassion Primary Care

Your journey begins with a Discovery Consultation, a thorough conversation about your health history, current symptoms, and goals.

From there, we design a targeted testing strategy. Most advanced tests are completed at home: urine collection kits, stool sample kits, and fingerstick blood draws are shipped directly to you with clear instructions.

Once results are in, we schedule a detailed results review appointment to walk you through your findings in plain language and present a personalized protocol. Follow-up testing at 3 to 6 months tracks your progress and allows us to refine your plan as your body responds.

Ready to Finally Get the Answers Your Symptoms Deserve?

Stop guessing. Start testing. Book a free discovery callation and let us determine which advanced lab panels will give you the clearest picture of what's driving your symptoms.

Safety

Advanced lab testing is safe and minimally invasive. Blood draws may cause brief discomfort or minor bruising; urine and stool collection is non-invasive and completed at home. If you take blood thinners or have a bleeding disorder, let us know before any blood draw. Stop biotin supplements at least 72 hours before blood-based hormone panels, as they can interfere with results.

Reach out if you have questions about collection instructions, timing, or preparation or if any new symptoms develop while following a protocol based on your results. Seek urgent care immediately for Chest pain, difficulty breathing, sudden neurological changes, signs of severe allergic reaction, or any acute symptom that feels alarming, regardless of your testing or protocol status.

FAQs

How is the DUTCH test different from a standard hormone blood panel?

Blood panels measure circulating hormone levels at a single point in time. The DUTCH test measures hormone metabolites over a 24-hour period – revealing how your body is breaking down and processing hormones, not just how much is present. This distinction is clinically significant for estrogen metabolism, cortisol rhythm, and androgen patterns that blood testing cannot capture.

Do I need all three tests?

Not necessarily. We design your testing strategy based on your specific symptoms, history, and goals. Some patients need only one or two of these panels; others benefit from the full combination. We discuss this in detail during your Discovery Consultation and prioritize the tests most likely to yield actionable information for your situation.

Can these tests be covered by insurance?

Standard blood tests included in a panel – such as thyroid markers or metabolic panels – are often billable through insurance. Specialty tests like the DUTCH Complete, GI Map, and KBMO FIT are typically out-of-pocket costs. We discuss pricing transparently before ordering and help you prioritize strategically based on your budget.

How do I collect the samples?

All three tests use at-home collection kits shipped directly to you. The DUTCH test requires four to five urine samples on absorbent paper over a 24-hour period. The GI Map uses a single stool sample collected at home. The KBMO FIT Test can be completed via fingerstick blood draw at home or a standard venous draw at a local lab. Each kit includes detailed, step-by-step instructions.

How long does it take to get results?

DUTCH results typically return within 2–3 weeks of the lab receiving your sample. GI Map and KBMO FIT results are generally available within 2 weeks. We schedule your results review appointment as soon as findings are available.

What if my results are normal?

Advanced lab ranges are interpreted differently from conventional "normal" ranges. A result within conventional reference ranges may still be suboptimal from a precision medicine perspective – and patterns across multiple markers often reveal more than any single value. If your results are genuinely unremarkable, that is also valuable information that guides us toward other areas of investigation.

Do you offer telehealth for results review?

Yes. After an initial consultation, results review and protocol development can be conducted via telehealth for patients throughout FL. At-home sample collection means you rarely need to visit a clinic to complete your testing.
