What Causes Conjunctivitis?

Inflammation of the conjunctiva of the eye.

Common presenting symptoms include:

  • Redness

  • Itching and a sensation of something inside the eye

  • Drainage from the eye

  • Eyes may be matted shut when first waking up

Conjunctivitis can be caused by bacteria, viruses (including COVID), and allergies.

Viral and even bacterial conjunctivitis will usually resolve on its own, although treatment may sometimes be recommended to relieve symptoms or prevent complications.

Bacterial and viral conjunctivitis are both highly contagious, so infected individuals should avoid sharing items such as handkerchiefs, tissues, cosmetics, towels, or pillowcases to reduce the risk of spreading the infection to others.

Good hygiene practices such as frequent handwashing and avoiding touching the eyes can also help prevent the spread of conjunctivitis.

Reasons for urgent referral to an ophthalmologist include decreased vision, headache, nausea, eye tenderness, or significant light sensitivity, as these symptoms may indicate a more serious eye condition requiring immediate medical evaluation.
